You scroll through Instagram and see an engagement ring.
You open LinkedIn and read, “Thrilled to announce…” followed by a promotion.
Then you look at your own life-and feel that sinking sensation in your chest.
Am I falling behind?
Welcome to the quarter-life crisis.
What Is a Quarter-Life Crisis, Really?
A quarter-life crisis usually hits somewhere between 23 and 30-right when the structured path of education ends and the “real world” begins.
Suddenly, there’s no syllabus.
No fixed timeline.
No clear instructions.
Instead, you’re faced with endless choices:
- Career decisions
- Financial pressure
- Relationship expectations
- Family comparisons
The overwhelm isn’t a personal failure-it’s a developmental phase many people experience but rarely talk about.
The Real Source of the Anxiety
In therapy, we often notice something important:
The anxiety doesn’t come from your actual life.
It comes from the Gap of Expectation.
This is the distance between:
- Where you are right now
- Where society, social media, or family told you that you should be
The wider that gap feels, the heavier the pressure becomes.
The “Tyranny of Shoulds”
In psychology, we call this pressure the Tyranny of Shoulds.
It sounds like:
- “I should have a clear career path by now.”
- “I should be earning more.”
- “I should be settled.”
- “I should know what I’m doing.”
These rigid expectations create unnecessary panic and self-doubt.
But here’s the truth most people don’t say out loud:
???? Very few people actually have it figured out in their 20s.
What Your 20s Are Actually For
Despite what social media suggests, your 20s are not meant for perfection or permanent decisions.
They are meant for:
- Trying things
- Making mistakes
- Changing directions
- Learning what doesn’t fit
It’s a messy, confusing, and incredibly important phase of experimentation.
Growth rarely looks neat while it’s happening.
If You Feel Lost, Read This Slowly
If you feel behind, stuck, or unsure:
- You are not failing
- You are not late
- You are not broken
You are simply in the middle of a redesign.
You don’t need the entire life map figured out today.
You only need to focus on the very next step.
And that-quietly and honestly-is more than enough.
